La mayoría de nosotros pasamos toda nuestra vida tratando de evitar el dolor, y tiene sentido desde una perspectiva biológica, ya que todos los animales también intentan evitar el daño como parte de nuestro instinto de supervivencia.

Sin embargo, también se nos enseña a evitarlo, el daño físico y emocional. Es muy común ver a los padres decir a sus hijos "¡Ten cuidado!" "¡No toques eso!" Y luego, si nos caemos o nos cortamos, algunos reaccionan con ira o miedo y se crea un trauma. Hoy día, ya estamos programados para evitar el dolor.

Es cierto que el dolor no es agradable, y esa es la raíz misma de los traumas y problemas en nuestras vidas, pero sin él no sabríamos que algo pasó. ¿Qué pasaría si vemos el dolor como el camino hacia la curación?

Cuando nos caemos o tenemos un accidente, el dolor es a veces la guía para saber dónde debemos prestar atención, especialmente cuando la herida está dentro. Los médicos a menudo preguntan si algo duele o no porque les dice algo, les dice "Presten atención, necesitamos curar algo en este lugar".

El mismo principio se puede aplicar al dolor emocional, el problema es que somos muy buenos creando muros y capas de emociones para tapar el dolor, y por lo tanto no lo sentimos, pero solo porque no sentimos algo, no quiere decir que no esté allí.

Estoy de acuerdo en que entrar y quitar todas esas capas emocionales da miedo, mirar directamente una herida emocional, un trauma, no es fácil; pero al igual que cuando tenemos un accidente, no tenemos que hacerlo solos, hay profesionales capacitados y personas amables que pueden ayudarnos a curar una herida. Existen herramientas y métodos para limpiar y coser correctamente un corte emocional.

El universo funciona con un principio curativo, y así como el cuerpo sabe cómo curarse después de haber sido dañado, nuestro cuerpo emocional sabe cómo reparar, con el cuidado, el tiempo y las herramientas adecuadas.

Si seguimos huyendo de nuestro dolor pasado, nunca desaparecerá, cuando en realidad el camino es en la dirección opuesta, hacia adentro; sabiendo que el miedo, la preocupación, la ansiedad y todo tipo de emociones también estarán ahí, porque no es un trabajo fácil, pero la única forma de sanar es a través del dolor.

Una vez que ya no le tenemos miedo, una vez que aprendemos a acompañarnos por los lugares oscuros y dolorosos de nuestra alma, podemos salir al otro lado, más fuertes y más ligeros.

El dolor no es el enemigo, es la flecha que nos guía en el proceso de curación.

Most of us spend all of our live trying to avoid pain and it makes sense from a biological perspective, as all animals also try to avoid damage as part of our survival instinct. 

However, we're also taught to avoid it, physical and emotional hurt. It's very common to see parents telling their children "Be careful!" "Don't touch that!" And then if we do fall or get cut, some react with anger or fear and a trauma is created. We're at that point, programmed to avoid pain.

It is true that pain is not pleasant and that is the very root of traumas and issues in our lives, but without it we wouldn’t know something happened. What would happen if we see pain as the way to healing?

When we fall and or have an accident, pain is sometimes the guide to know where do we need to pay attention, especially when the wound is inside. Doctors often times ask if something hurts or not because it tells them something, it says "Pay attention, we need some healing to do in this place"

The same principle can be applied to emotional pain, the problem is that we're very good at creating walls and layers of emotions to cover up the pain, and therefore not feel it, but just because we don't feel something, it doesn't mean is not there.

I agree that going inside and take off all of those emotional layers is scary, to look directly into an emotional wound, a trauma, it's not easy; but just like when we have an accident, we don't have to do it alone, there are trained professionals and kind people who can help us to heal a wound. There are tools and methods to properly clean and sew an emotional cut.

The universe works with a healing principle, and just like the body knows how to heal after it's been damaged, so our emotional body knows how to repair, with the proper care, time and tools.

If we keep running away from our past pain, it will never go away, when the path it's actually to in the opposite direction, inside; knowing that fear, worry, anxiety and all kinds of emotions will be there as well, because it's not an easy job, but the only way to heal is through pain.

Once we are no longer afraid of it, once we learn how to accompany ourselves through the dark and painful places of our soul, we can come out on the other side, stronger and lighter.

Pain is not the enemy, is the arrow that guides us though the process of healing.

Alergias y miedo / Allergies and fear

Primero quiero aclarar que no soy médico, también quiero aclarar que cada persona, cada cuerpo es único, así que no tomen esta entrada como una verdad universal o como un tratamiento. Siempre consulten con su médico y con su intuición antes que todo.

Llevo muchos años observando alergias en mi cuerpo, observando cómo han ido evolucionando y cómo han ido creciendo. Por supuesto son incómodas, pero ya hasta se han convertido en una especie de forma de vida.

Cuando pienso cómo actúa el sistema inmunológico me recuerda mucho a esas partes internas que llamamos Protectores en IFS. En términos generales, las alergias se pueden ver como una respuesta exagerada del cuerpo hacia una amenaza, lo cual crea inlfamación, secreciones, dolor, y muchos otros síntomas. Los protectores de alguna forma hacen lo mismo, como es el caso de los "bomberos"; que son los encargados de apagar los incendios emocionales, bajar las llamas en nuestro sistema interno.

Si lo vemos desde la perspctiva de que nuestras emociones y nuestro cuerpo están conectados, si en algún momento sentimos que estamos frente a una amenaza emocional, o alguna de nuestras partes heridas está expuesta, nuestros "bomberos" saldrán al rescate tratando de proteger lo más rápido posible. De igual manera, el cuerpo responderá, si el cerebro cree que verdad estamos frente a un peligro, dará la señal a todo el sistema nervioso de defenderse, lo que crea los síntomas físicos.

Siguiendo esta misma línea, entonces ciertas alergias, en especial las crónicas, pueden estar relacionadas con una creencia interna de que estamos en peligro y debemos defendernos. La primera pregunta que debemos hacernos es qué es lo que no tolero? puede ser polvo, cambio de estaciones, comidas...Una vez que identificamos el agente activador, llega la siguiente pregunta: Cuál es el miedo detrás de ese simbolismo? Puede ser miedo a los cambios, miedo a las bacterias, o Cuál es el trauma detrás en el caso que la alergia haya comenzado después de un episodio impactante. En ese miedo, esa herida es donde el "bombero" está protegiendo y es donde debemos trabajar para sanar.

Las alergias, toman mucha energía de nuestro cuerpo, no hay descanso para el sistema inmunológico cuando se cree que un peligro está cerca; no es calidad de vida y muchas veces el tratamiento tradicional es tomar medicamentos que bloquean la respuesta inmunológica, así como hacemos con las emociones al buscar obstruir el dolor o el miedo con televisión, alcohol, drogas o cualquier manera para distraernos de lo que pasa adentro.

Mi sugerencia es, siempre que haya una alergia, preguntemos: Por qué siento que debo protegerme? y así ta vez le demos un descanso a nuestros bomberos y a nuestro sistema inmunológico.

I have been observing allergies in my body for many years, watching how they have evolved and how they have grown. Of course they are uncomfortable, but they have already become a kind of way of life.

When I think about how the immune system works it reminds me a lot of those internals parts we call Protectors in IFS. In general terms, allergies can be seen as an exaggerated response of the body to a threat, which creates inflammation, discharge, pain, and many other symptoms. The protectors somehow do the same, as is the case with the "firefighters"; who are in charge of putting out emotional fires, lowering the flames in our internal system.

If we see it from the perspective that our emotions and our body are connected, if at any moment we feel that we are facing an emotional threat, or one of our injured parts is exposed, our "firefighters" will come to the rescue trying to protect as fast as possible. In the same way, the body will respond, if the brain truly believes that we are in danger, it will give the signal to the entire nervous system to defend itself, which creates the physical symptoms.

Following this same line, then certain allergies, especially chronic ones, may be related to an internal belief that we are in danger and we must defend ourselves. The first question we can ask ourselves is What do I not tolerate? it can be dust, change of seasons, food ... Once we identify the activating agent, the next question is: What is the fear behind this symbolism? It can be fear of change, fear of bacteria, or what is the trauma behind all of this in the case that the allergy has started after a shocking episode. In that fear, that wound, is where the "firefighter" is protecting and it is where we can work to heal.

Allergies take a lot of energy from our body, there is no rest for the immune system when it is believed that a danger is near; it is not quality of life and many times the traditional treatment is to take medications that block the immune response, just as we do with emotions by seeking to obstruct pain or fear with television, alcohol, drugs or any way to distract ourselves from what is happening inside .

My suggestion is, whenever there is an allergy, let's ask: Why do I feel like I should protect myself? And so maybe we give our firefighters and our immune systems a break.

Ataques de Panico y Trauma / Panic Attacks and Trauma

 Como siempre lo he compartido, siento que los ataques de pánico y la ansiedad tienen muchas causas. Una de ellas es el trauma.

No sólo he obsevado que es una de las variables presentes, sino que con el tiempo voy confirmando cada vez más, que se trata del origen de estos episodios.

Quiero empezar por definir que trauma no es necesariamente una situación en sí, sino la forma en que me impactó el acontecimiento. Para algunos, un accidente simple no es nada terrible, siguen su vida sin ningún problema, pero para algunos de nosotros, pudo habernos marcado de una forma más profunda. Este es el trauma.

Tampoco tiene que ser un hecho trágico como muchos se imaginan, a veces puede ser solo palabras, presenciar algo, o hasta escuchar algo que le pasó a otra persona, puede quedar grabado en nuestro inconsciente.

Nuestro sistema nervioso está hecho para la supervivencia, para protegernos; y en el momento en que ocurre un trauma, este maravilloso y complejo cableado graba todo detenidamente, incluisve nuestra reacción en el momento: si pudimos correr, si pudimos defendernos, si estábamos solos o si nos congelamos y no pudimos hacer nada. Todo eso queda como en nuestro "disco duro", nuestros órganos, nuestros músculos.

Después, podemos notar que hay una relación entre cómo reaccionamos frente a ciertas situaciones en el presente y nuestros miedos relacionados al pasado. Por ejemplo, si tuvimos situaciones traumáticas siendo bebés, o en la niñez temprana y no pudimos movernos, hablar o defendernos, es posible que experimentemos esas mismas sensaciones de adultos, o el miedo a que eso pase, no poder moverse o defenderse.

Sin importar cuál haya sido el trauma, a qué edad o cómo reaccionamos cuando ocurrió; siempre es posible sanarlo, liberarlo y para esto hay muchas técnicas.

TRE (Trauma Release Exercise) es un método para liberar emociones que han quedado atrapadas en el cuerpo. IFS (Internal Family Systems) nos ayuda a poder ir hacia las partes internas que todavía están heridas para ayudarlas de una forma compasiva, sin juicio y especialmente, a su propia velocidad; ya que al tratar algo tan delicado como el trauma, es importante hacerlo con paciencia, respetando el proceso de cada persona.

En la hipnosis o visualización,  podemos acceder al inconsciente y al evento ocurrido, pero vivirlo desde otra perspectiva y con más herramientas emocionales.

Estas son sólo algunas de las muchas maneras que se puede tratar el trauma, la metodología queda a decisión de cada persona.

Lo más importante es recordar no presionarse y tratarse con compasión, ya que estamos trabajando con el origen de todo: el dolor. Si podemos ir a atender esas heridas, y ver el trauma como un aprendizaje, a notar que aún así logramos sobrevivir, que somos más fuertes de lo que pensamos, vamos a poder fortalecer nuestro sistema nervioso y a dejar de temer al dolor, ya que después de todo, es parte de la experiencia humana. Tanto el día como la noche, tienen su función y su encanto.

As I have always shared, I feel like panic attacks and anxiety have many causes. One of them is trauma.

Not only have I observed that it is one of the variables present, but over time I am confirming more and more that it is the origin of these episodes.

I want to start by defining that trauma is not necessarily a situation in itself, but the way the event impacted me. For some, a simple accident is not terrible at all, they continue their life without any problem, but for some of us, it may have marked us in a more profound way. This is the trauma.

Nor does it have to be a tragic event as many imagine, sometimes it can be just words, witnessing something, or even hearing something that happened to another person that can be recorded in our unconscious.

Our nervous system is made for survival, to protect us; and at the moment when a trauma occurs, this wonderful and complex wiring structure records everything carefully, including our reaction in the moment: if we ran, if we defended ourselves, if we were alone or if we froze and could not do anything. All that remains as in our "hard drive", our organs, our muscles.

Later, we can notice that there is a relationship between how we react to certain situations in the present and our fears related to the past. For example, if we had traumatic situations as babies, or in early childhood and we could not move, speak or defend ourselves, we may experience those same feelings as adults, or the fear that this will happen, not being able to move or defend ourselves.

No matter what the trauma was, at what age or how we reacted when it happened; it is always possible to heal it, free it and for this there are many techniques.

TRE (Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a method for releasing emotions that have been trapped in the body. IFS (Internal Family Systems) helps us to go to the internal parts that are still injured to help them in a compassionate way, without judgment and especially, at their own speed; since when treating something as delicate as trauma, it is important to do it with patience, respecting the process of each person.

In hypnosis or visualization, we can access the unconscious and the event that occurred, but live it from another perspective and with more emotional tools.

These are just some of the many ways trauma can be treated, the methodology is up to the individual.

The most important thing is to remember not to push yourself and treat yourself with compassion, as we are working with the source of everything: pain. If we can go to attend to those wounds, and see the trauma as lessons, to notice that we still managed to survive, that we are stronger than we think, we will be able to strengthen our nervous system and stop fearing pain, because after all, it is part of the human experience. Both day and night have their function and charm.
